Saint Joseph of Cupertino (1603-1663) was born in Joseph Desa on June 17, 1603. Like Christ, he was born in a stable in Cupertino near Lecce in Puglia, southern Italy.

His father Felice was the caretaker of the Marquises of Cupertino castle near Lecce. However, he went into hiding because he signed too many bills that benefited his friends. His mother Franceschina Panaca was such a strong and rigorous woman that Joseph later referred to his childhood as his "first trainee."

As a child, he was known for being unwise, dreamy and distracted. It is said that he is forgetful, bad at housework, and easy to get angry. He also experienced intense spiritual ecstasy, during which he would stare into the distance.

When he was seven years old, he went to school, but had to leave when a gangrenous tumor was found on his leg. This resulted in him being bedridden for five years, during which time he listened to his mother's story about Saint Francis. During this period, the desire to see Assisi and become a Franciscan monk began to form.

One day, his mother took him to the church of Santa Maria Thanksgiving in the nearby town of Galatone, where he anointed him with the oil from the prayer lamp. Joseph recovered immediately, returned to Cupertino, and walked on his two legs.

Joseph started training as a shoemaker when he was 16 years old, but he didn't succeed.

The following year, he applied to join the Observatory Franciscan monk, but was rejected due to lack of education. Then he went to Capuchins, where he was initially accepted. However, after starting his internship, he was deemed "not suitable for any job" and his spiritual ecstasy made life in the community difficult. They also turned him away.

After being expelled from the Capuchin, Joseph was ashamed to return to Cupertino, so he went to find two uncles from the monastic society. They told him the news of his father's death and the fact that the soldiers were looking for him because he inherited his father's debt. Therefore, they decided to hide him in a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Joseph lived as a "Secret of God" in a small room connected to the monastery, where a sacred priest handed him food. Six months later, the sacristy told his uncle that the young Joseph liked God's things very much. His uncle gave him a third habit, freeing him from worldly authority and his father's debts.

Joseph is a stable boy and uses this time to learn to grow in humility and tenderness. His spirituality left a deep impression on the monks and was accepted as a lay brother at the age of 22-a monk who swore but was not accepted as a priest.

Brother Joseph spent his apprentice year alone under the guidance of his uncle Father Giambattista Panaka. Overcoming difficulties, he kept Latin and the rules of St. Francis in mind. He is often found secretly reading or practicing Latin late at night. He felt a strong obligation to study, but also because he had missed education since he was a child.

His uncles now want to make him a candidate for the priesthood through Br. Joseph lacks intellectual talent and knowledge. They fear that being allowed to accept minor orders, the deacon will ask him to read, sing, and explain a verse in the gospel.

Joseph did his best: he remembered the shortest passage he could find, from Luke 11:27-28.

As Providence had hoped, the bishop who checked him randomly opened the Bible and found the exact same gospel passage. Although he passed his first test, he must then take a more rigorous clergy test.

The bishop reviewed the first four candidates, and they all passed easily. Then, just when it was the turn of Deacon Joseph, a panting messenger ran up to the bishop with an urgent letter: he was going to be transferred to another diocese. The distraught bishop immediately conveyed to Joseph the same positive judgments that others had received. Joseph was ordained as a priest on March 28, 1628.

Father Joseph’s first mission as a pastor was to work in the Gravina community in Puglia, where he will spend fifteen years. His work includes doing trivial tasks around the monastery, such as gardening, caring for animals, cleaning stalls and helping in the kitchen. Joseph was sometimes found wandering in a mental daze, wandering in different places in the monastery, not knowing how he got there.

Joseph had a deep prayer life, and he established a deeper union with God. He said that all the troubles in this world are just "wars" played by children with sticks and guns.

His levitating tendency began from this point. During prayer, he will be lifted a few yards off the ground. Seventy witnesses witnessed his spiritual "flying", and the news of his holiness began to spread.

Unusual phenomena related to him began to create conflicts in the community. Sometimes, his colleagues will scold him for not accepting money. At other times, after people in the town—thinking of him as a saint—want his clothes as a relic, he would return to the monastery with his coat. Panicked, his superiors tried to isolate him and prevent the crowd coming to see him.

Others are more skeptical. They accused Joseph of deliberately using his "flying" to attract people's attention, and they believed that the miracle statement was wrong. In 1638, he was summoned to the Inquisition, where he was detained and subjected to several weeks of scrutiny. When the judge did not find his fault, he was finally released.

Joseph was then sent to the Holy Monastery of Assisi, where he lived for nine years. He began to experience a period of mental exhaustion, and his ecstasy stopped. Other saints refer to it as the "dark night of the soul", which is a period of purification or spiritual trials.

At the same time, Joseph continued to be spiritually guided and comforted by people of low status. Although he was allowed to meet people, he was forbidden to preach, listen to confessions, or participate in parades and celebrations during the holidays. As a result, his mood became even more depressed.

Because of his many followers in Assisi, he was sent to two remote monasteries in the province of Marches. Finally, he was sent to Osimo, not far from Loreto, not far from the Adriatic. In Osimo, Joseph continued to be restricted in interacting with people. However, he endured the ordeal with great patience and insisted on physical asceticism, including wearing iron chains.

On August 10, 1663, Joseph fell ill with a fever, and experienced the last "fly" on August 15th on the Assumption Day, while he was doing Mass. He passed away three days later and was buried in front of a large group of people.

Saint Joseph was canonized as a saint by Pope Clement XIII on July 16, 1767. In 1781, a large marble altar was built in the Church of St. Francis in Osimo so that his body could be placed under the altar. It has stayed there ever since.

This "flying saint" has experienced countless sufferings and sufferings throughout his life. Nonetheless, he showed what it feels like to have a child's faith.
